The hike to Mti Mkubwa Campsite (2,750m) takes around three hours and leads you through beautiful forest trails filled with fresh mountain air and the sounds of nature. By the time you arrive at camp, the porters will have your tents set up, and our chef will be busy preparing a delicious lunch.

After enjoying your meal, you’ll have time to unwind, explore a little around the campsite, or simply relax and take in the peaceful surroundings until dinner is served. In the evening, your guide will gather everyone for a friendly briefing, sharing details and helpful tips about the next day’s trek.

Altitude : 2,200 m – 2,780 m
Hiking Distance : 7 km
Hiking Time : 5 hours

On the second day, you’ll wake up early and enjoy a hearty breakfast before beginning your hike from Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp. The trek usually takes around five hours, and along the way, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the western face of Kibo, the highest peak of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail gradually opens into the lower moorland zone, where you’ll notice unique landscapes dotted with giant shrubs and colourful wildflowers.

Once you arrive at Shira 1 Camp, the Claris Tours & Travel team will already be at work. Our dedicated porters will set up your tents, and our chef will prepare a freshly cooked lunch for you. After eating, you can take some time to relax, enjoy the peaceful surroundings, and let your body adjust to the altitude. In the evening, your guide will gather everyone for a friendly briefing, sharing important details and what to expect for the next day’s adventure.

Altitude : 2,780 m – 3,500 m
Hiking Distance : 8 km
Hiking Time : 4 - 5 hours

On Day Three, you’ll start your morning with an early breakfast before setting out on the scenic hike from Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp. The walk usually takes about 5–6 hours and is fairly gentle, giving you plenty of time to soak in the stunning African landscapes all around you.

Once you arrive at Shira 2 Camp, the team from Claris Tours & Travel will already be at work. Our porters will set up your tents and make sure everything is comfortable, while our chef prepares a freshly cooked lunch for you to enjoy. After your meal, you can relax, take in the peaceful surroundings, or simply rest and recharge.

In the evening, after dinner, your experienced Claris Tours & Travel guide will gather the group for a briefing about the next day’s trek, ensuring you feel prepared and confident for the journey ahead.

Altitude : 3,500m – 3,840 m
Hiking Distance : 5 km
Hiking Time : 3 - 4 hours

Start your day early with a warm wake-up call and a hearty breakfast to prepare for the adventure ahead. Today’s trek takes you toward the iconic Lava Tower, standing tall at 4,630 meters. The trail winds through a dramatic semi-desert landscape filled with rugged rocks and sweeping mountain views. After about five hours of steady hiking, you’ll pause for a well-earned lunch before continuing up the rocky scree path toward Lava Tower.

This is one of the more challenging days on the mountain, as your body begins adjusting to the higher altitude. But it’s all part of the journey — and the reward is worth it. After lunch near Lava Tower, you’ll descend approximately 680 meters to Barranco Camp, a key step in proper acclimatization. The two-hour descent is not only easier on the lungs but also offers incredible photo opportunities, especially of the breathtaking Western Breach.

As the sun sets over the mountain, you’ll settle into Barranco Camp for a delicious dinner and a well-deserved rest.

Altitude : 3,840 m – 3,960 m
Hiking Distance : 11 km
Hiking Time : 7 - 8 hours

Begin your morning with an early wake-up call and a hearty breakfast to give you the energy you’ll need for the day ahead. Today’s trek may include climbing the iconic Barranco Wall — a steep but incredibly rewarding stretch that offers a true sense of achievement once you reach the top.

After conquering the Wall, you’ll descend into the beautiful Karanga Valley, where the landscape transforms into lush greenery and dramatic mountain views. Once you arrive at Karanga Camp, the Claris Tours & Travel team will have everything ready for you. The porters will set up your tents while our chef prepares a freshly cooked lunch for you to enjoy.

Later in the afternoon, you’ll take part in an acclimatization hike toward Barafu Camp, ascending approximately 200 meters before returning to Karanga. This gradual climb helps your body adjust to the altitude and improves your chances of a successful summit.

In the evening, relax with a warm, delicious dinner prepared by our chef. Afterward, your experienced guide from Claris Tours & Travel will brief you on the next day’s adventure, walking you through the route, potential challenges, and important details so you feel confident and prepared for what lies ahead.

Altitude : 3,960 m – 4,035 m
Hiking Distance : 5 km
Hiking Time : 5 hours

Start your day early with a wake-up call and a nourishing breakfast to energize you for the trek to Barafu Camp. The trail offers a mix of rocky paths and gentle inclines, rewarding you with stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s dramatic high-altitude scenery. As you climb higher, remember to take it slow and steady—proper acclimatization is key to staying strong and avoiding altitude sickness.

When you arrive at Barafu, the Claris Tours & Travel team will take care of everything. Our porters will set up camp while the chef prepares a warm and satisfying lunch. After your meal, you’ll have time to relax and conserve your energy before dinner.

In the evening, your guide will gather the group for an important summit briefing. You’ll learn about the route ahead, what challenges to expect, safety tips, and how best to prepare for the final push. Get as much rest as you can, because your summit adventure begins later that night.

Altitude : 4,035 m – 4,640 m
Hiking Distance : 5 km
Hiking Time : 5 hours

You’ll wake up around 11:30 PM, have some tea and biscuits, and then begin your summit push under the stars. From there, you’ll head northwest, trekking across loose scree as you make your way toward Stella Point on the crater rim. The climb to Stella Point (5,685m) takes about six hours and is often the toughest part of the entire journey—both physically and mentally. But with the support and encouragement of the experienced team at Claris Tours & Travel, you’ll keep moving forward, one steady step at a time.

After a short rest at Stella Point, you’ll hopefully be greeted by a breathtaking sunrise lighting up the horizon—an unforgettable reward for your effort. From there, it’s another two-hour climb over snow-covered trails to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

You’ll spend some time at the summit taking photos and soaking in the achievement, but not too long, as the cold and altitude can be intense. After celebrating your accomplishment, you’ll descend back to Barafu Camp in about three hours for a brief rest. Later, you’ll continue down to Mweka Camp, where a warm dinner and a well-earned overnight stay await you.

Altitude : 4,640 m – 5, 895 m –
3,090 m
Hiking Distance : 17 km
Hiking Time : 15+ hours

After enjoying breakfast at Mweka Camp, you’ll begin your final descent to Mweka Gate. From there, you’ll be transferred back to La Mama Hotel, where a warm shower and a delicious hot lunch will be waiting for you — the perfect way to relax after your incredible climb.

At the end of your journey, it’s customary to tip your mountain crew as a token of appreciation for their hard work and support. Special tipping envelopes are available at the hotel for your convenience.

If you’re thinking about continuing your adventure with a safari, the team at Claris Tours & Travel will be happy to assist you. You can meet with our safari coordinator at the hotel, who will provide a detailed briefing on the different safari options available. After some well-deserved rest, you’ll have the opportunity to plan the next chapter of your journey.

Destination Location

Mount Kilimanjaro stands proudly in northeastern Tanzania, just three degrees south of the Equator. It is Africa’s highest peak and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world.

Among the legendary Seven Summits, Kilimanjaro is considered one of the most accessible. It doesn’t require technical climbing skills, and with proper preparation and determination, any reasonably fit person has a strong chance of reaching the summit.

Is This Trip for You?

If you arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, a representative from Claris Tours & Travel will warmly welcome you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.

We highly recommend arriving at least one day before your climb begins so you can rest and adjust. If you’re travelling from Nairobi, that travel day can also serve as your rest day.

If time allows, you can:

  • Take a guided walk through local rice fields and rainforest areas

  • Explore the town of Moshi and enjoy some shopping

  • Relax by the hotel pool

  • Treat yourself to a soothing massage

The evening before your trek, your guide will conduct a detailed briefing. You’ll need to separate your trekking gear from your main luggage. Rental equipment is available if needed, and any extra bags can be safely stored in a secure room at your hotel in Moshi at no additional cost.

The Start of Your Trek

After a hearty breakfast, you’ll head to the trekking office for final preparations. Depending on your chosen route, the drive to the trailhead may take up to an hour and can be a bit bumpy — but that’s all part of the adventure!

At the park gate, climbers complete registration formalities before beginning the journey. Meanwhile, porters organize supplies including food, water, and camping equipment. Be sure you have everything you need in your daypack, as porters move quickly ahead. Your guide will always be available to answer questions and assist you.

A Typical Day on the Mountain

Most hiking days begin between 8:00 and 9:00 AM and last about 5–6 hours. The pace is intentionally slow and steady to allow your body to acclimatize properly. You’ll often hear your guides say “pole pole” (pronounced po-leh po-leh), which means “slowly” in Swahili — the golden rule of Kilimanjaro climbing.

Lower slopes are lush and vibrant, filled with rainforest beauty. As you climb higher, the landscape opens into dramatic alpine scenery with breathtaking panoramic views. Evenings at camp are quiet, offering the perfect opportunity to rest, reflect, and capture unforgettable photos.

Summit Night

Summit attempts typically begin around midnight, depending on your route and your group’s pace. You’ll climb as high as you comfortably can. Some trekkers choose to stop at the crater rim, while others continue all the way to the highest point.

After celebrating your achievement, your guides will lead you down promptly to reduce the risk of altitude-related issues. You’ll descend past your previous campsite and continue to the next camp for an overnight stay.

Optional Acclimatization Day

You can add an extra acclimatization day at Horombo Huts (3,690 m / 12,100 ft). This allows you to spend a full extra day and night there.

On this day, you may:

  • Rest and recover at the huts

  • Take a scenic walk toward the base of Mawenzi Peak

  • Gain a deeper understanding of the mountain’s weather and altitude conditions

This additional day significantly improves acclimatization and increases your summit success rate before continuing to Kibo Huts for your summit push.

Travel Companions

Group sizes are kept small, typically between 5–7 climbers, to ensure personalized attention. If travelers are starting the same route on the same day, groups may be combined up to this limit.

Private climbs can also be arranged at no extra cost. While we try to match solo travelers with groups whenever possible, it cannot be guaranteed. Large groups can also be accommodated upon request.

Guides & Support Team

Climbing Kilimanjaro requires a licensed local guide, and Claris Tours & Travel works with experienced professionals fluent in English, Spanish, French, and German.

Your support team includes:

  • Lead guide

  • Assistant guides

  • Cook

  • Porters

Porters carry your main luggage, food, and camping equipment — you’ll only need to carry a daypack with personal essentials.

Tipping Guidelines

After your trek, you’ll receive an envelope at your hotel for distributing tips. You may tip in U.S. dollars, Euros, Tanzanian shillings, or a mix of currencies. Small bills are helpful for individual tipping. There’s no need to carry cash up the mountain.

  • $15 per day for guides

  • $10 per day for assistant guides and cooks

  • $7 per day for porters

  • 1 guide per 8 climbers

  • 1 assistant guide per 3 climbers

  • 1 cook per 8 climbers

  • 5-day Marangu Route: 2 porters per climber (minimum 4)

  • 6–7 day treks: 3 porters per climber (minimum 5)

  • 8-day Lemosho Route: 4 porters per climber (minimum 8)

  • For a 6-day trek, budget approximately $200 per climber for tips.

Porters and guides also deeply appreciate practical gifts such as warm clothing, hiking boots, or backpacks. Many climbers enjoy inviting their guides to dinner or drinks after the climb as a personal thank-you.

Transportation

Except for international airfare, Claris Tours & Travel includes all in-country transportation and logistical arrangements. This covers airport and hotel transfers, transport for all scheduled activities, and equipment.

Money & Currency

The local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling. While U.S. dollars, Euros, and credit cards are accepted at larger hotels and stores, you’ll often receive a better exchange rate when paying in local currency.

ATMs are available in major towns such as Moshi and Arusha, but access may be limited in smaller areas, so plan accordingly.
